Background: The prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) increases in men. Although several risk factors, including metabolic syndrome (MetS) and depression, were identified, the underlying etiological factor remains unclear.
Kidney stones have a prevalence of 8.8% in the United States, with men affected more than women (10.6% versus 7.1%). Most stones are composed of calcium oxalate (61%). Calcium phosphate (15%) and uric acid (12%) stones are the second and third most common types.
Staghorn calculi require surgical treatment but remain a challenge for surgeons, especially in solitary kidney patients. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL) has been greatly facilitating the removal of complex stones.
The Kidney Injury Test (KIT) Stone-Score provides an objective measure of stone burden. Unlike urinary supersaturation the KIT Stone-Scores assess underlying stone disease rather than urinary solute composition.
