(UroToday.com) Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a perioperative approach to managing surgical patients. The goal of an ERAS approach is to return the patient to normal physiology more quickly. Anticipated benefits of such an approach in the radical cystectomy population include an earlier return of bowel function, decrease hospital length of stay, and decreased readmissions. However, the impact of ERAS on radical cystectomy (RC) outcomes remains under-studied. In a podium presentation at the American Urologic Association Virtual Annual Meeting, Dr. Stephen Williams and colleagues present a systematic review of the literature regarding ERAS protocols and radical cystectomy outcomes with the primary outcome of hospital length of stay (LOS).
