The Young Academic Urologists (YAU) recently appointed internationally-known experts Prof. Véronique Phé (FR) as Chairman and Mr. Nadir Osman (GB) as Vice-Chairman of the YAU Working Group Functional Urology.

A professor of urology as well at the University Hospital La Pitié-Salpêtrière, Prof. Phé specialises in urinary incontinence, neuro-urology, voiding disorders, organ prolapse or descent and bladder reconstruction surgery due to cancer or malformation.

Mr. Osman of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an academic functional and reconstructive urologist with a specialist interest in urethral reconstruction for both male and female patients. His academic interests lie in clinical trials in functional and reconstructive urology, and in the application of tissue engineering approaches.

Search for new members

The Working Group is currently accepting applications from young and promising urologists who can offer their expertise and take part in future projects. The criteria for eligibility as members are as follows:

  • < 40 years old
  • An EAU member
  • Affiliated to an academic institution
  • At least 5 publications in the sub-field of expertise as first, second or last author. Peer-reviewed Journals in English can be considered.

The required documents are:

  • Completed YAU CV sheet
  • Letter of motivation with statement for the group of interest
  • Letter of recommendation of the academic tutor/responsible
  • Draft of a new scientific project (maximum 500 words)

Working Group profile

With the support of the European Association of Urology (EAU), the YAU was developed to stimulate research activity in critical areas of urology, as well as, enrich academic collaboration.

The YAU is comprised of 10 expert Working Groups focused on scientific cooperation, manuscript preparation, study design, and other scientific output. The YAU Working Group Functional Urology covers a myriad of subjects in the field which includes urinary incontinence, prolapse, female urology, reconstructive urology, neurogenic and non-neurogenic dysfunction, among many others.

The aims and objectives of the Working Group are the following:

  • Conduct literature reviews and highlight points for discussions
  • Set up collaborations to gather big data on incontinence and reconstructive urology procedures
  • Establish international cooperation to develop high-quality multicentre prospective projects
  • Support the EAU Guidelines Section for review of the Guidelines upon request
  • Work together with the EAU Section of Female and Functional Urology (ESSFU) on ongoing projects

Upcoming projects

The first and main project of the Working Group addresses non-neurogenic male urinary incontinence with the following plans:

  • A critical review of literature on the male artificial urinary sphincter that is published in the European Urology journal
  • A multicentre retrospective collaborative project on male urinary incontinence/artificial urinary sphincter
  • Set up a prospective project about male urinary incontinence

Other projects include collaborative studies on women’s slings and fistula surgery in women.
