Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) (UroToday.com) During this afternoon’s Endoscopic Moderated Poster Session at the World Congress of Endourology, Dr. Vincent Estrada from Hospital Pellegrin presented his research which sought to determine whether a single-use flexible endoscope was effective in recognizing various forms of stones endoscopically. Dr. Estrada initially chose to investigate the diagnostic qualities of the URF-V flexible video ureteroscope by Olympus combined with a simultaneous multicolor CCD chip because of its ability to deliver a high definition view of stone surface area and cross-sectional morphology. However, his research team, as of 2015, began to work with a single-use digital flexible ureteroscope (USCOPE by Pusen) which additionally possesses a CMOS imager. It was the ultimate objective of their study to validate a list of kidney stones recognized using the USCOPE Pusen device.
Dr. Estrada and his team were able to establish an endoscopic classification and recognition system that would identify different types of kidney stones between 2015 and 2018. All interventions his team analyzed were performed by a single surgeon with expertise in endourology. Finally, the endoscopic recognition was then compared to the microscopic recognition of stone fragments and their spectrophotometric analyses.
The results of the study demonstrated that high definition digital imaging with a CCD chip allowed for endoscopic recognition of all different types of pure and mixed kidney stones. The USCOPE Pusen endoscope with the CMOS imager was found to provide digital images that would allow for the recognition of certain types of stones and specific stone morphologies.
